Dear friends, KUTTU AVALAKKI is one of our oldest recipes, or you can say one of the” forgotten recipes“, which was prepared by our older generations.
Are you aware of or heard about this KUTTU AVALAKKI?
KUTTU means pounding and AVALAKKI means flattened or beaten rice. (which is also known as POHA).

KUTTU AVALAKKI was the snack prepared for relishing during traveling. I remember my grandmother used to make and pack for us during the journey, and we enjoyed it a lot.
The snack is spicy, tangy, a little sweet, and salty. It has all the tasty flavors to tickle our palate and taste buds.
This snack is a powdered form of poha, combining groundnuts, fried grams, dry coconut, and a few spices like cumin, coriander, sesame, red chili, and garnish.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE KUTTU AVALAKKI

- Medium poha-2 cups
- groundnuts-3/4 cup
- fried grams-3/4 cup
- dry coconut thin slices-3/4 cup
- Red chilies-8 numbers
- coriander seeds-1 tablespoon
- cumin seeds-1 teaspoon
- jaggery-1 tablespoon
- Tamarind-1/2 lemon size
- sesame seeds-1 tablespoon
- salt-1 teaspoon.
- for garnishing:-
- oil-2 tablespoons
- urad dal-1 tablespoon
- mustard seeds-1 teaspoons
- hing-1peanut size
- curry leaves-few
- Turmeric-3/4 teaspoon
PREPARATIONS NEEDED FOR MAKING KUTTU AVALAKKI:-
- Take a grinder and coarsely grind red chilies, coriander, and cumin seeds.


- Now put 2 cups of poha, and tamarind into it again and grind once.

- Add salt, jaggery, fried grams, and ground nuts. (3/4 of the measured quantities, keeping the rest for garnishing.

- Add coconut slices, and grind for a few seconds. keep a tablespoon for the garnish.
The coarsely ground powder to make kuttu avalakki is ready.

Method of garnishing for kuttu avalakki:-
- Keep a thick-bottomed pan or kadahai on flame to heat.
- add oil and heat.

- when hot add mustard seeds and hing.

Now add Urad dal, and groundnuts, and stir for a few seconds until it gets crisp and changes color.

Now you can add coconut slices. fried grams, and curry leaves.

Add Sesame seeds, and turmeric and stir till the coconut gets crisp.

Now you can add the powdered poha to the garnish.

- Now give a good mix to the kuttu avalakki.

Now the ancient dish, KUTTU AVALAKKI is ready to eat anywhere and any time, just to change the taste of your palate.
