Today I shall show you, how to make spicy and healthy foxtail millet khichadi.

It is known as Navane in Kannada, kutaki in Hindi, and Fox tail millet in English.

Before, the recipe, I want to introduce you to the tiny, nutritious golden pearl-like seeds. named foxtail millet.

It gets the name fox tail millet because the millets grow in the pinnacle, which looks like a fox tail.

It is an ancient grain, found in different parts of the world, especially in the regions of the Alps, so is also known as ITALIAN MILLET. It can be grown with a very minimal amount of water, at 25-45-degree temperatures. The crop can be grown 3 times in a year. The crop is ready to harvest in 90 days.

FOX TAIL MILLETS, can be used in different types of dishes as RICE PULAO, FRIED RICE, DOSA, IDLY, UPMA, KHICHADI, etc.

Today, I will show the best, quick, and healthy way to cook the spicy and tasty foxtail millet khichadi.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR FOXTAIL MILLET KHICHADI:-

  • Foxtail millet-1 cup
  • toor dal-3/4 cup
  • onions-2 medium sliced
  • potato-1 medium medium cut
  • capsicum-1 medium roughly cut
  • tomatoes-2 medium roughly cut
  • green chilies-3-4 finely chopped
  • ginger and garlic-1 teaspoon finely cut
  • fresh coriander leaves strings cut
  • lime-1 cut into 2 halves
  • salt-1 teaspoon
  • red chilly powder-1 teaspoon
  • turmeric powder-1/2 teaspoon
  • cumin powder-3/4 teaspoon
  • Garam masala-1 teaspoon
  • coriander powder-1 big spoon
  • oil-1 tablespoon
  • ghee-1 tablespoon
  • mustard-1/2 teaspoon
  • cumin seeds-3/4 teaspoon
  • hing-1small pinch
  • water-to cook 3+3 each for dal and millet. (1:3 ratio)

Note:-you can use carrots, fresh peas, and french beans also.

PREPARATIONS TO BE DONE FOR FOXTAIL MILLET KHICHADI:-

  • Soak millet for 2-3 hours, after washing thoroughly.
  • soak toor dal for 1 hour after washing.
  • Cut onions in slices.
  • Cut capsicum, tomato, potato, green chilies, garlic, and ginger as shown.
  • keep all the dry spices ready.

method of making foxtail millet khichadi:-

  • Heat oil in a pressure pan can use ghee instead if you want.
  • When hot, reduce the flame and add mustard, cumin, and Hing.
  • Saute till cumin and mustard seeds splutter.
  • Now add green chilies and ginger garlic pieces.
  • saute and then add capsicum and onions. saute for a few seconds.
  • Now add cut potato, and then tomatoes.
  • Saute for a few seconds.
  • Now is the time to add all dry spices and mix well.
  • Add a little water. (1 cup).
  • Add the soaked dal and stir.

  • Now add soaked foxtail millet and mix.

  • Add about 5 cups of water and mix.
  • At this stage, you can taste the salt and spices and may add some if needed.

  • CLOSE THE LID OF THE COOKER AND PRESSURE COOK FOR 3-4 WHISTLES.
  • Let the cooker cool by itself.
